California Physical Therapy Direct Access

Under California law, direct access to physical therapy is permitted, meaning consumers can see a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s referral, under certain conditions.

California Business & Professions Code § 2620.1 allows patients to initiate physical therapy treatment directly from a licensed physical therapist, as long as the treatment is within the PT scope of practice.

You may receive up to 45 calendar days or 12 visits (whichever comes first) of care without a physician’s approval. To continue past that point, the physical therapist must obtain a dated physician or podiatrist signed plan of care and ensure you’ve had an evaluation directly by that provider (in-person or via telehealth).
